Everyone here at World Imports USA loves keeping up on the latest BMW news. After all, the innovations of today will affect the used BMW models of tomorrow.

So what's the latest?

Recently, some sketches of the most recent BMW patent request surfaced online, and they suggest that the company may be working on a new seven-speed lockout manual transmission for market.

The sketch for the new transmission features an easy-to-use H-design. The seventh and final gear is as far out to the right as possible, and it's likely being engineered to allow drivers to reach their maximum fuel economy.

Worried about shifting into the wrong gear when driving a manual?

BMW knows that some drivers out there have such fears, and thus avoid vehicles equipped with a manual transmission. But this is a concern that the company is looking to address in the design as well. Specifically, BMW plans to equip the new transmission with a magnetorheologic fluid, which thickens with an electric charge. Once thickened, the fluid works to lock the gear gates that should not be selected, given the vehicle's current speed and rpm.

What's more impressive; this isn't the only new transmission option that BMW is considering. The company also has plans to explore a shift-by-wire computerized design that would completely eliminate the need for a clutch.
