First and foremost, you want to make sure any passengers/children riding along with you are buckled up. If you have young children (never let a child under the age of twelve sit in the front) who require a booster/safety seat, make sure it's properly installed. Next, it's your turn. Wearing your seatbelt is the single most important thing you can do to stay safe, so do it.
Then, make sure your posture is as well balanced as possible. Whether driver or passenger, both feat should be on the floor (or on the pedals in the case of the driver) and your back should be flat against the seat. Make sure to position the driver seat so that your face is at least ten inches away from the steering wheel.
Once you're driving, make sure neither your or your passengers ever lean against the doors. It can cause injuries by preventing airbag deployment. Another tip to prevent airbags from malfunctioning is to have your vehicle inspected, should the red airbag light turn on.
