A crowd larger than 25,000 came together for the 28th Annual Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run, referred to as "Florida's Largest Office Party." In order to ensure a smooth afternoon, streets closed throughout Downtown Miami, and security was increased this time around because of the Boston Marathon bombings. Runners in the event were very aware of that fact, with many examples of signs of solidarity for the victims in Boston.
Regardless of the extra security, the Mercedes-Benz-backed run started the same way it always does, using the city's biggest annual Happy Hour. Hundreds of tents lined downtown, in addition to catered trays with champagne and wine. At the run, a "Miami Runs for Boston" banner that sobered up the event a great deal. As the day came to a close the focus remained on Boston with everyone wishing the very best for all there were affected by this horrible incident.
Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez had the following sentiments concerning the event: "I come watch this race every year, and seeing all these people made me think of Boston. I wanted to sign this banner as my own little tribute to the victims of Boston, to let them know that nobody can stop us Americans. We will continue to gather and celebrate our patriotism and freedom. We come together in times of tragedy. I am so proud of Miami because all these people showed up."1
